Sunset Overdrive Review Script
Welcome to this review of the apocalyptic game Sunset Overdrive which has a 16+ age rating which I think is a bit too high. Now this game was developed by a company called Insomniac games but they gave it to Microsoft Studios to publish the game and put into onto the Xbox one store. Let’s get into the review shall we, oh and by the way some spoilers will be in this review.
Platforms -
Sunset Overdrive is an Xbox One exclusive as it was published by Microsoft studios and they wouldn’t exactly allow their rivals Sony to use the game they were given by Insomniac games. The game only includes a single player storyline but also has a multiplayer section where you and your friends can take on the mutants whilst protecting a certain area. I played it on Xbox one when it came out as one of the games for gold so I played it for free but if you missed out on that window of opportunity to get the game for free you would now have to pay up to £40 on the Xbox store.
Genre -
The game is an action-adventure game but also involves third person shooting. The apocalyptic story game is not like any other apocalyptic game because most of them are all in a dark setting but this game has loads of bright colours with the punk-rock attitude implemented into the game.
The story mode allows you to wall ride, float on water, air dash and many more things that allow you to move around quicker in this enormous city the game is set in. So you could say the game allows you to be a parkour genius.
Narrative/Storyline -
The storyline for this game is a really good one and includes a lot of really good cut scenes that help make the storyline so much better. They go into a lot of detail and that allows the player to really experience this amazing game.
The game is similar to post-apocalyptic games but it allows you to have so much more freedom because for the story mode you have to travel to certain places in the city to start the main missions or side missions as favours for others that survived the apocalypse. This allows you to have fun whilst traveling to the mission and you can even fight the mutants any time you wish to.
The apocalypse starts at a concert with the launch of a new energy drink called Overcharge Delirium XT created by the company Fizzco but they skipped health checks of the drink as they wanted people to drink it right away but a certain ingredient has caused everyone who drinks it to become mutants called OD and the more they drink the Overcharge energy drink the bigger they become. The character you play then meets up with a group after being saved by the leader and then you help them try and stop the apocalypse and warn the rest of the world. You then attempt to destroy the main source of the drink and Fizzco HQ but unfortunately you take a big hit but after some misleading credits and a really good use of the fourth screen the ending changes.
The multiplayer aspect of this game is called chaos squad and it is very simple as you and up to 3 friends can take on the OD and either just kill a certain amount of them, protect something or destroy something but it is a very enjoyable aspect of the game but I do think that the single player story mode stands out more.
Characters -
There is a lot of characters in this game and the game goes into the depth of the character and explains most of their backgrounds and what they were doing when the apocalypse happened.
The main character which is yourself is customised and everything about the character is determined by you, the game allows you to choose the gender, the skin colour, the name, hair colour and eye colour and eventually after completing certain missions you can customise the clothing of your character and you start of as a Janitor working for the company that started the apocalypse. Some special features of your character is that you have multiple abilities such as being able to dash in mid-air, slide on water and being able to respawn in many different funny ways and some of my personal favourites include emerging from the delorean from back to the future, crawling out a TV like samara in the ring and also being thrown out of a van by some OD. If you choose a male character then the character will be voiced by Yuri Lowenthal who is quite popular for the voicing of Ben Tennyson in the famous Ben 10 series. But if you choose a female character then your character will be voiced by Stephanie Lemelin who has provided her voices for TV shows like Young Justice and Dawn of the Croods.
Another big character in my opinion is Walter and he is the first big character we see after seeing the concert as he saves your characters life not once but twice with the second time seeing Walter meet his end. You could even say that Walter is your characters Mr Miyagi as he teaches you what you need to know for the apocalypse.
Now there are a lot of other main characters in this game but there is too many of them to go into too much detail so I’ll just list some of them: Sam from the Oxfords, Esperanza from the Las Catrinas and King Ignatius and Wendy Tarth from the Fargarthians.
Gameplay -
The gameplay for this game is really good and the visuals are really detailed. They really made the gameplay so good that it could compete with other big games.
I think what you do in this game is really easy to understand, so basically in the single player mode you are really just trying to survive the apocalypse and then give the information to the rest of the world about what this drink does. To survive you must gain help from other people but for others to help you they want you to do something for them now usually it is you either getting something for them, protecting something for them or just doing something with them. You must complete lots of missions in this game and instead of just spawning into the mission you get the freedom to run to where the mission is in the city and I think that is really cool because you are given the freedom to explore the city if you wanted to and getting to the missions is fun as well because you can kill OD, wall ride, air dash and even slide on water. Now there is not difficulty options for this game so it’s just one set difficulty for this game which cannot be changed and in my opinion that is one of the games weak spot because when I played I there were some missions that took me a long time to complete because they were just really hard. Now in the multiplayer mode you can do missions similar to the story mode but with friends and this time you can choose where you want to do the mission and you basically just have to protect something or just kill a lot of OD.
Target Audience -
Now considering this game is a 16 I assume the game is intended for the older teenagers or early 20's in age perspective but I think the reason I was pulled towards the game and a reason for other people as well is that it is an apocalypse game and I really do enjoy those games like the walking dead because they involve a lot of action and drama and that's what I like in a single player game. Now there might be other reasons to be drawn towards apocalypse games such as the killing side of it or the surviving part but they don't have that much of a big influence on me but they might on you. Another aspect of this game that draws you in is that the game has a lot of vibrant colours.
Recommendation -
Now personally I think this game is a really good and enjoyable game and so do a lot of other people because this game has received a lot of good reviews. My favourite thing about this game was having the freedom to do what I wanted whilst not playing missions and I enjoyed that because I could explore the city and look for any Easter eggs that may be lurking around the city and the way you travel is really good as I have mentioned before but I also really enjoy that you can customise your character any way you want so you can make him have a wacky hair due and some clothes that look silly or you could try and make them look like you as much as you can but for me I tried to make my character look cool with vibrant colours and I remember having angel wings on my character at one point as well now I think I mainly used the colours blue, pink and black to customise my character. I would recommend this game to anyone who enjoys apocalypse games or just needs a new single player game to play.
Ratings for at least three different aspects -
Even though this game has a really good single player story mode it also has a really good multiplayer mode as well and I would give the multiplayer a rating of 7.5/10 now even though it was good I think they could have improved it a bit more by adding more things to do or maybe allowing us to free roam with our mates.
The music in this game is really good and there is lot of it but I would give it a 7/10 based on the fact the only main genre is punk rock music and I feel like they could add more music genres into the game.
I would give the single player mode a 9.5/10 because it is really developed well and has a lot of great custcenes which I think makes it a lot better.
I give the game an overall rating of 9/10 including everything and the only things I can see them improving is multiplayer and the variety of music.
